Megnusson tosses in career-high 26 points in Men's Basketball opening winSALISBURY, SC – Host Catawba College and Augusta State earned wins in men’s basketball action on Saturday night at Goodman Gym in the Salisbury Roundball Classic. Catawba held off J.C. Smith for a 93-87 win, while Augusta State rallied past Shaw 62-60. It was the opener for all four teams. In the opener, Catawba connected on a dozen three-pointers, but had to hold off a furious last minute rally by Smith. The Indians held an 86-75 lead with just over a minute and half remaining before the Bulls stormed back to pull within 89-87 on a three-pointer by Robert Madison (Lexington, KY) with 17 seconds remaining. Catawba’s Brian Frasier (Martinsville, VA) hit a pair of free throws with 12 second remaining and Marcus Reddick (Salisbury, NC) added two more with three seconds to go for the final margin. Jerome Givens (Versailles, KY) hit two free throws for Smith with 1:34 to go to make the score 86-77. John Fulton (Manning, SC) had a three-pointer with 48 ticks left and after two free throws by Catawba’s Helgi Magnusson (Reykjavik, ICELAND), Benjamin Chasten (Mt. Olive, NC) hit a three and was fouled for a four-point play to reduce the deficit to 88-84 with 36 seconds remaining. Frasier hit one of two free throws before Madison’s three-pointer. Catawba led early at 17-12 then got three-pointer of five of its next six possessions to build a 32-17 edge at the 8:39 mark of the opening half. The Tribe kept a double-digit lead most of the rest of the way until the late charge by the Bulls. Magnusson led all scorers with a career-high 26 points and added nine rebounds. Duke Phipps (Newport News, VA) posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 assists. Smith was led by Givens, who had 25 points, and Fulton, who had 15 points and 15 rebounds. In the nighcap, Augusta’s Jason Mills (Augusta, GA) hit a layup with 35 seconds left as the Jaguars rallied from a seven-point second half deficit. The basket gave Augusta a 61-60 lead and Shaw’s Chas Bailey (Philadelphia, PA) was off the mark on a 15-foot jumper with two seconds remaining. Tommy Greer (Wollert, AUSTRALIA) hit one of two free throws for the final margin. Shaw came out cold and hit just four of its first 18 shots and fell behind 27-14 with 6:39 to go in the half. The Bears rallied back to within 37-30 at the break. Shaw would eventually take the lead at 40-39 on a layup by Damon Harrison (Newark, NJ) with 14:31 to go. The Bears pushed the lead to seven at 51-44 with 10:17 left and held the lead until Mills’ winning basket. Jermale Wilkerson (Suwanee, GA) was the only Augusta player to reach double figures with 11. Milos Nikolic (Niksic, SERBIA-MONTENEGRO) had nine points and eight rebounds. Darius Acuff (Detroit, MI) led Shaw with 16 points, while Bailey added 15. Ron Colbert (Raleigh, NC) had 12 points and 11 boards. #####
