Catawba Defeats St. Augustine's 75-53
RALEIGH, N.C. – Coming off their worst performance of the season 12 days ago, Catawba men’s basketball concluded 2018 with a 75-53 victory over St. Augustine’s at Emery Gymnasium Monday.
Jameel Taylor’s 21 points led the Indians, who improved to 9-2, while the Falcons dropped to 2-9. Marcell Haskett joined Taylor in double figures for Catawba with 13 points.
The Indians built a 32-21 advantage at halftime, scoring 13 of the final 16 points.
In the second half, Jquwan Ruffin and Mel’Quan Ames outscored the Indians 8-2 in a span of two minutes, cutting the Falcons’ deficit to six with 13:31 left.
Catawba answered and methodically built its advantage to its largest lead of the game at 25 with a minute remaining.
Ruffin led St. Augustine’s with 11 points, while Miguel Brown grabbed a team best six rebounds.

- Catawba outscored St. Augustine’s 32-17 in the paint.
- The Indians went 26-of-44 (59.1 percent) from the field, including 4-of-9 (44.4 percent) from behind the arc.
- St. Augustine’s shot 40 percent (18-of-45) from the floor and 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from long distance.
- Catawba tallied 27 points on 17 turnovers by the Falcons, who converted 21 miscues by the Indians into 12 points.
Catawba continues its three-game road trip, with a 4 p.m. tip-off at Southern Wesleyan Wednesday.
