Locklear's double-double propels Women's Basketball to opening win

SALISBURY, NC – Catawba College placed three players in double figures and won its season opener 88-65 over visiting Ohio Valley in women’s basketball action on Sunday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians also helped cause 28 Fighting Scot turnovers, while committing just 14 of their own. Ohio Valley falls to 0-2. Senior Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) posted a double-double for Catawba with 21 points and 12 boards. Senior transfer Aisha Stewart (Topeka, KS) followed with 19 points, while Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC) added 17. Twelve of the 14 players used by Catawba scored. Catawba took the lead for good on a steal and layup by Darden at 14-12 with 13:10 left in the opening half. The Lady Indians would hold a 37-28 edge at the break. Locklear had 14 points and nine boards at the break. Catawba quickly built an 18-point lead early in the second half, taking a 52-34 advantage on a steal and layin by Locklear. Ohio Valley cut the deficit to eight at 61-53 with 7:21 left on a pair of free throws by Rebekah McDowell (Ronceverte, WV), but that was as close as the Scots would come. Catawba responded with consecutive layups by Julie Kaufman (Damascus, MD) and would build its lead to 20 at 75-55 with 3:49 left. Point guard Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) had nine assists and three steals, while Kaufman had eight points and eight rebounds. Latissha Isby (Washington, DC) and Stacy Mielecki (Keyser, WV) each had 14 points and eight rebounds for Ohio Valley. #####
