Men's Basketball moves to 2-0 after win over Shaw

SALISBURY, SC Ė Augusta State helped off J.C. Smith and host Catawba rolled to a win over Shaw in menís basketball action on Sunday afternoon at Goodman Gym in the Salisbury Roundball Classic. Augusta State won 73-72 to improve to 2-0, while Catawba topped Shaw 97-68 to also move to 2-0. Both J.C. Smith and Shaw fall to 0-2. Catawba shot 59% (23-of-39) in the final half and pulled away from a 37-33 halftime lead, scoring 60 points in the final half. Shawn raced to a 20-9 lead in the opening six minutes with Brian Frasier (Martinsville, VA) scoring the first 12 points for Catawba to keep the Indians close. The Indians used a 10-1 run late in the half to tie the score at 30-30. Shaw scored just five points over the first eight minutes of the second half as Catawba bolted to a 57-38 lead. The Indians would eventual lead by as many as 32 in the closing minutes. Catawba placed five players in double figures led by Frasier and Helgi Magnusson (Reykjavik, ICELAND) with 15 each. Duke Phipps (Newport News, VA), the tournamentís MVP, scored 14 along with freshman Timo Verwimp (Cologne, GERMANY). Darius Acuff (Detroit, MI) led all scorers with 31 for Shaw. Augusta State struggled out of the gate in the opener, hitting just four of its first 20 shots as the Bulls grabbed a 16-7 lead at the 10:34 mark. The Jaguars would find the range in the final 10 minutes and took the lead on a Ben Butler(Elberton, GA) three-pointer at 24-21 with 5:33 in the half. Augusta would pull out to a 31-23 lead at the break. The Jaguars would lead by 12 early in the second half and held a 68-58 advantage with three minutes left when Smith began to cut into the lead. A four-point trip cut the margin to 68-62 and after a free throw by John Fulton (Manning, SC), the Bulls were within 68-65 with 1:37 left. Calvin Dotson (Baltimore, MD) cut the lead to 71-69 on a three pointer with eight seconds remaining, but Clarence Brown ((Miami, FL) hit two free throws with two seconds left to ice the game. Butler and Jason Mills (Augusta, GA) each had 16 points to lead the Jaguars, while Brown and Patrick Curran (Blacksburg, VA) each had 13. Curran added 11 rebounds and four assists. JCSU was led by Dotson and Chris Clyburn (Charlotte, NC), who each had 15. Fulton added 13 for the Bulls. #####
