Shepherd Homers, Myers Deals in 3-2 Win
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Riley Myers shutdown the opposition on the mound, while Hunter Shepherd powered Catawba’s offense past Palm Beach Atlantic at J.M. “Jake” Rubin Park Monday.
The Indians swept the two-game series with a 3-1 victory over the Sailfish, which fell to 2-2 on the year. Catawba concluded its four-game road trip to South Florida with three wins, opening the season at 3-1.
Heath Mitchem’s RBI single and Shepherd’s two-run blast in the top of the first was all the run support Myers needed.
Henderson Lentz took the second pitch of the game off his right elbow and came around to score when Mitchem’s seeing-eye single found its way through the left side of the infield. Jackson Raper grounded to short, forcing Mitchem out at second. Jackson trotted home after Shepherd deposited Lance Fry’s, the starting pitcher for the Sailfish, 2-2 pitch beyond the right-centerfield wall.
Myers allowed a run in the third on a double and a single by Palm Beach Atlantic but that was all he surrendered.
The Sailfish threatened in the first with two on and two outs, before Connor Roland struck out. Myers retired Palm Beach Atlantic in order in the second, fourth, sixth and eighth innings.
Sean Houck reached on a fielding error to open the home half of the fifth, before Myers sat the next three batters down.
Peyton Williams allowed a lead-off single in the bottom of the ninth but closed the door and secured the win for the Indians.
ON THE MOUND:
Myers scattered five hits, allowing one run in eight innings of work to earn his first win of the season. He struck out nine and walked one. Williams gave up one hit and fanned one in a scoreless ninth, securing his second save of the season.
Fry went the first three innings and took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits.
LEADING THE INDIANS:
Shepherd went 1-for-4 at the plate, with his lone hit being the two-run home run. Mitchem, Raper, Cameron Morrison and Robbie Cowie add a hit each.
PALM BEACH ATLANTIC LEADERS:
Brandon Smith accounted for two of Palm Beach Atlantic’s six hits, with four others recoding one each.
Catawba opens its 2019 home slate Wednesday against nationally ranked Mount Olive. First pitch at Newman Park is 2 p.m.
HOW THEY SCORED:
Top first: (CAT 3-0) - Lentz was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jeremy Simpson. He scored on a single through the left side of the infield by Mitchem. Mitchem was erased at second on a fielder’s choice, when Raper grounded to the shortstop. Shepherd homered to right center with two outs.
Bottom third: (CAT 3-1) – Derek Schwimer doubled down the left-field line with one out. He scored on a two-out single to left center by Brandon Seltzer.
