Locklear's double-double not enough as Women's Basketball falls to GC&SU

KENNESAW, GA - Latia Love scored 32 points to lead Georgia College and State University to a 76-67 victory over Catawba College Friday night in the first game of the Ron Walker Memorial Classic at the Spec Landrum Centre. GC&SU improves to 3-0, while the Lady Indians fall to 1-1. Love got most of her points from behind the arc, going 6-for-8 from long range and was a perfect 4-for-4 in the first half. The junior from Lebanon, Tennessee also did her damage from the charity stripe as she knocked down 10 of 11 free throws. She also ripped down 16 rebounds to lead the team. The Lady Bobcats fell behind 5-0 after the first minute and a half but battled back to tie the score at 5-5. Love then hit a three-pointer at the 16:49 mark to give GC&SU the lead for good. The Lady Indians would keep it close during the first half behind the shooting of Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC), who had 12 points at the break on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor. Locklear finished with a team-high 31 points while grabbing 24 rebounds, one shy of the school record. Catawba cut the lead to 32-30 with one minute until halftime, but Bobcats would close the half with back-to-back three-pointers, including one from senior guard Brea Haggard with only two seconds left to give GC&SU a 39-31 lead at halftime. The Lady Indians came out fighting at the start of the second half, scoring the first six points and cutting the lead to 39-37. But the Lady Bobcats went to Love when they needed a bucket, and she delivered by burying a three-pointer from the wing to push the lead to five. That was as close as Catawba would get as the Lady Bobcats kept the pressure on and actually got the lead up to 15 points. Catawba would again get within five with only four minutes to go, but couldn't get over that hill. Kristi Jones and Haggard scored in double figures for the Lady Bobcats, netting 10 points and 12 points, respectively. Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) added 20 points for the Lady Indians. #####
