Taylor Moves into Fifth on Catawba's All-Time Scoring List in Win over Wingate
SALISBURY, N.C. – Jameel Taylor dropped 14 points in Catawba’s win over Wingate Wednesday, moving into fifth place on Catawba’s all-time scoring list with 1,685 points.
The Indians improved to 16-5 overall and 9-4 in the South Atlantic Conference with the 84-75 victory over the Bulldogs, which fell to 13-9 on the season and 9-5 in league play.
After leading by as many as 16 in the second half at Goodman Gym, Catawba found itself in a dog fight, as the teams exited the huddle from the final media timeout.
Daquan Lilly’s 3-pointer with 11:03 gave the Indians a 63-47 lead, which was erased by a 21-5 run by Wingate. After the timeout, Emarius Logan converted both free-throw attempts, squaring the game at 68-68.
Marcell Haskett dropped off a beautiful assist to Jordan McElveen, who flushed a two-handed dunk with 3:29 left, giving Catawba the final lead change of the game.
The Indians netted the next seven points, building their lead to 77-68 with just over a minute remaining. The teams traded buckets the rest of the way for the final margin of victory.
Haskett led Catawba with 18 points, while Lilly and Taylor finished with 14 points each. Taylor narrowly missed a double-double with nine boards, while dropping six assists and grabbing two steals. McElveen registered 12 points and Jeremy McLaughlin added 10.
Wingate’s Marco Haskins led all scorers with 23 point and snagged a game-high 14 boards. Logan netted 16 points.
Inside the Numbers:
- The Indians went 33-of-60 (55 percent) from the field, including 7-for-22 (31.8 percent) from 3-point range.
- Catawba dominated in the paint, outscoring Wingate 48-28
- The Indians led for 36:07 but the lead changed hands four times and the game was tied twice.
- Catawba improves to 4-1 in television games this season and the final three home games will be aired on Antenna TV in the Charlotte area.
The Indians travel to Mars Hill Saturday and the tip-off is at 4 p.m.
