Softball Rolls to Sweep of Virginia State
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba rolled past Virginia State in a softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians swept the twin bill, winning 12-4 and 10-2 to improve to 6-2 on the year. The visiting Trojans fall to 1-7.
A seven-run third provided the difference in the opener. Leah Huggins continued her hot hitting over the weekend. She had a two-run double in the second and another two-run double in the big third frame. Preston Ellenberg added a two-run single in the break-out inning.
Summer Howerton (1-0) earned the win in her first appearance in the circle. She surrendered four runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Sydney Goertzen was 3-for-3 with three runs scores, while Carlee Brawley had two hits, scored twice and drove in two. Huggins had her two hits and four RBI, while Sierrah McCarthy added a pair of hits.
Kennedy Presson homered and had two hits for Virginia State. Samantha Cunningham also proved two hits. Brooklynn Bilyard (0-4) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs over two and a third innings.
The Trojans jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two, scoring without a hit by drawing five walks. Ellenberg would enter in the second and shut down Virginia State the rest of the game and improved to 2-0. She allowed just two hits and struck out six.
Catawba tied the game with single runs in the first and second then put up a six-spot in the fifth. McCarthy singled home two runs and Nicole Hunter followed with a three-run homer. Hunter finished her five RBI day by doubling home the final two runs in the sixth.
Goertzen added two more hits in game two, as did McCarthy. Hunter finished with three hits and Jordan Dean picked up two. Presson (1-3) had the loss for VSU.
Catawba will travel to Barton on Saturday for a 1 pm doubleheader with the Bulldogs.
