Softball Splits Doubleheader at Barton
WILSON, N.C. -- Catawba split a softball doubleheader with host Barton on Friday afternoon at Jeffries Field. The Catawba Indians took game one 7-2, but were shutout 1-0 in game two. Catawba is now 7-3 on the year, while the Bulldogs are 2-6.
Allie Baker and Preston Ellenberg both homered in the opening win for Catawba. Baker broke open a close game with her three-run home run in the sixth that provided the final margin. Ellenberg connected on a two-run dinger in the first to stake the Lady Indians to a 2-0 lead.
Baker, Ellenberg and Carlee Brawley each had two hits in the game. Brawley had the other RBI with a single in the second for a 3-0 lead. Ellenberg (3-0) notched the win as she went the distance allowed the two runs on nine hits. She walked none and fanned seven.
Hayley Grizzle collected three hits for Barton. Taylor Freeman and Hannah Jones had two. Jessica Onega singled home a run and Jordan Blake added a sacrifice fly as the Bulldogs closed within 3-2 in the third. Jones took the loss with three innings in the circle.
Makayla Meeks picked up a win in game two that went just five innings due to darkness. Meeks (1-1) allowed four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Jones scored on an error in the first inning for the line tally of the game.
Brroke Walser (2-2) suffered the loss, giving up just the one unearned run in her five innings. She surrendered just four hits and struck out four. Baker, Ellenberg, Walser and Sydney Goertzen had the hits for the Lady Indians.
Catawba is scheduled to return to action at home on Tuesday, hosting Belmont Abbey in a 1 pm doubleheader.
