SALISBURY, N.C. -- Jeremy Simpson's late-inning heroics lifted Catawba over Shippensburg in game two of Friday's doubleheader at Newman Park.

With the 13-1 and 4-3 victories, the Indians improve to 10-1 on the season, while the Red Raiders fall to 0-2. Catawba extended its winning streak to nine and remain unblemished with a home record of 7-0.

Simpson went 5-for-9 at the plate in the two games, with three runs scored and the game-winning RBI in the sixth inning of the nightcap. Jackson Raper was 3-for-9 at the dish, driving in five and scoring two in the two games. Lee Poteat, who had not played since being injured in the second game of the season, registered three hits in four at-bats, scoring twice and driving in two more.

Game One Recap (Catawba 13-1):
Jack Goertzen's two-out home run in the first was the only run Shippensburg tallied. He recorded two of the team's seven hits.

Henderson Lentz dropped a bunt down the third-base line and beat it out for a lead-off single in the Indians' first. He stole second and moved to third when Jeremy Simpson flied out to right. He scored on Heath Mitchem's ground out to second, knotting the score at 1-1.

Catawba built a 5-1 edge with four runs in the bottom of the third, with four hits and a miscue by the visitor's defense.

Both starting pitchers settled in, posting zeros on the scoreboard, until the Indians scratched out a tally in the bottom of the sixth on two hits.

Jared Showalter relieved Zack Sims to start the home seventh. Catawba knocked him around with six of the seven batters he faced reaching safely and five came around to score, busting the game open at 11-1. Hunter Shepherd blasted his team leading fourth homer over the centerfield wall, driving in two.

Joe Butts tacked on two more runs in the eighth for the Indians with a triple off the brick wall in center.

Poteat registered three hits, while six other Catawba players registered two each.

Shepherd picked up his first win of the campaign, scattering seven hits in 6.1 innings, allowing the one run and striking out five. Sims worked the first 6.0 innings on the mound for Shippenburg and was charged with the loss. He allowed six runs, two earned, on eight hits and two base-on-balls.

Game Two Recap (Catawba 4-3):
Trailing 3-1 in the sixth of a seven-inning game, Poteat and Cameron Morrison worked one-out walks to set the table for Catawba's rally. A passed ball allowed the duo to move up 90 feet, putting the tying run on second. After a strikeout left two on with two outs, Justin Darden, Shippensburg's third baseman, committed the team's third fielding error of the game. He rushed his throw on a chopper by Lentz that skipped away from the Red Raiders' first baseman, allowing both runners to score and moving Lentz to second and setting the stage for Simpson.

Catawba struck first in game two when Simpson doubled with one out and moved to third on a wild pitch. Raper delivered a two-out RBI single and gave his team a 1-0 first-inning lead.

In the top of the third, the first three Red Raiders reached safely and two came in to score, moving in front 2-1.

Painter dropped a bunt down the third-base line, for a lead-off single. Baggett followed with a double, putting men on second and third. Goertzen singled up the middle, driving in both runners.

Knotts was hit by a pitch in the sixth and came in on a RBI single by Darden, increasing the visitor's lead to 3-1.

Catawba's Riley Myers worked the first 5.2 innings on the mound and allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks, while fanning six. Greg Brown fanned the only batter he faced and earned his first win of the season. Peyton Williams tossed a scoreless seventh and collected his third save.

Dalton Oates started the game on the hill for Shippensburg and dominated the Indians' offense, allowing one run on five hits and striking out 10. He picked up the no decision when Michael Hope surrendered three unearned runs on two, two walks and the critical miscue in the home sixth.

Goertzen was 2-for-3 from the plate and drove in two of the Red Raiders' three runs.
