Ketchie Tosses Complete Game; Indians Sweep Weekend Series
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Bryan Ketchie turned in an old school performance on the mound for Catawba at Newman Park Saturday.
Ketchie threw a 106 pitches, including 79 strikes, facing just six batters over the minimum in a complete-game 7-1 victory over Shippensburg. He scattered six hits, walked one and fanned six.
With the three-game weekend sweep, the Indians improved to 11-1 and have won 10 straight, while the Red Raiders open the season at 0-3.
Noah Inch matched Ketchie through the first four frames as the game remained scoreless through the top of the fifth.
Catawba finally got to Inch in the fifth, beginning with three-consecutive singles to open the frame. Henderson Lentz beat out an infield single and moved to third on Jeremy Simpson's base knock through the right side of the defense. Heath Mitchum followed suit with a RBI single, scoring Lentz and giving the home team a 1-0 lead. The Indians added to its advantage with a walk, two doubles and a fielding error, carrying a 4-0 edge into the final four innings.
Ketchie, who had enough run support continued to shutdown Shippensburg's offense and his teammates rewarded him with a 7-0 margin with a three-run eighth.
The fourth pitcher of the afternoon for the Red Raiders, Jack Jenkens, fanned the first batter he faced, before allowing the next five Indians to reach safely. A base-o on-balls, a triple, single, double and a second base knock of the frame pushed the advantage to 7-0.
Shippensburg pushed broke up the shutout when Tommy Baggett led off with a single. He moved to second without Catawba making an attempt to get him out and advanced to third on a single. Jacob Pollock grounded out to first, plating Baggett.
Catawba pounded out 15 hits, with eight of nine registering at least one. Heath Mitchem went 3-for-5 from the dish, while Lentz, Simpson, Hunter Shepherd, Joe Butts and Lee Poteat added two each. Jackson Raper went 1-for-4, extending his hitting streak to 12 games.
The Indians host UNC Pembroke Tuesday at 3 p.m.
