Softball Splits Extra-Inning Games at USC Aiken

WILSON, N.C. -- Catawba split a pair of extra-inning softball games with host USC Aiken on Saturday afternoon at Satcher Field. USCA took game one 4-3 in nine innings, while the Catawba Indians prevailed 13-6 in a nine-inning nightcap. Catawba is not 8-4 on the season, the Pacers are 4-6.

Down two entering the seventh inning of game two, Catawba battled back to send the game to extra innings. Preston Ellenberg drew a one-out walk and Jordan Dean followed with a home run on the first pitch she saw to tie the game.

Catawba erupted for seven runs in the ninth to get the split. Dean and Carlee Brawley had bases-loaded singles to bring home the first two runs. Grace Holland and Nicole Hunter followed with two run singles.

USC Aiken had gone on top 4-0 in the first before the Lady Indians got a two-run double from Sierrah McCarthy in the second and two-run single by Allie Baker in the fourth to tie it. Katie Painter, who had hit a grand slam in the first, added a two-run homer in the sixth to put the Pacers back on top before the Catawba comeback.

Dean went 3-for-4 in game two with three RBI. Brawley, Holland and Leah Huggins each had two hits. Brooke Walser started and had a no decision, allowing six runs on six hits over six innings. She fanned five. Madison Hunter (2-1) tossed three hitless innings of relief to pick up the win. She posted three strikeouts.

Hannah Price homered on the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth, scoring a pair, as the Pacers grabbed the opener 4-3. A ground out by Holland in the top of the ninth had pushed in a go-ahead run for the Lady Indians.

Holland had scored the first two runs for Catawba, each time tying the contest. She stole home as part of double steal in the third to tie the game at 1-1 then came home on Baker’s single fifth for a 2-2 tie.

Price, who had two hits for USCA, singled home a run in the third. Leah Boghosian also had two hits in game one for the Pacers. Caroline Cockrell (3-2) got the win. She allowed two earned runs off just three hits over nine innings. She struck out 10. Ellenberg (3-1) took the loss for Catawba, surrendering two earned runs with three strikeouts.

Catawba travels to North Georgia next weekend for two doubleheaders that included Palm Beach Atlantic. On Saturday, Catawba will face host North Georgia at 2 pm and PBA at 4 pm.
