Track and Field Teams Place Fifth at SAC Indoor Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Both Catawba track and field teams finished fifth at 2019 South Atlantic Conference Track & Field Championships, each moving up five spots from a year ago. On Saturday at the JDL Fast Track, the Catawba Indians recorded the highest individual finishes at the Championships and broke six school records.

After two third place finishes on Saturday, Catawba posted second place finishes by MeKayla White in the women’s triple jump and by Darius Turner in the men’s 60 meters. White jumped a school record 11.45 meters, while Turner equaled his school mark from the prelims with another 6.86 in the final.

Also setting records were Candace Swepson in the women’s shot put (11.43m), Brien Pittman in the men’s 400 meters (50.51), Josiah Lane in the men’s high jump (1.75m) and the men’s 4x400 relay (3:25.85) which were Burnette, RahQuan Terry, Pittman and Braxton Ford. The relay team was fourth, Pittman fifth and Swepson sixth in their events.

Others scoring points on Sunday were Jones Carter with a sixth in the men’s triple jump. Patience Hunt with a sixth in the women’s 800 meters, Tom Joyce with a fourth in the men’s 800 meters, Rashaun Noble with a seventh in the 60 meters and a fifth in the 60 hurdles.

Burnette put up points with a fourth in the 200 meters and an eighth in the 60 meters. Turner was fifth in the 200 meters with Tyler Osifo taking seventh. Hannah Mercer claimed seventh in the women’s 3000 meters and Shakalya Robertson was eighth in the women’s triple jump. Kierra McNeill claimed fourth in the women’s 60 meters with Bryannah Smith-Cunningham going fifth and Akeena Maxwell eighth. Smith-Cunningham also scored with an eighth in the women’s 200 meters, while Maddie Bohannon placed seventh.

Turner posted a provisional qualifying time in the 60 meters and is currently ranked 31st. If he were to advance to the NCAA II Nationals it would be held on March 8-9 in Pittsburg, Kan. The outdoor season cranks up on March 15-16 as the team will split between the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational and the Charlotte 49er Classic.
