Baseball Edged by North Greenville 7-6
TIGERVILLE, S.C. -- Catawba suffered a 7-6 walk-off defeat at North Greenville’s Ashmore Park Wednesday.
The Indians (16-6) led the mid-week non-conference tilt all the way, until Jared Williams game-winning single plated two, giving the Crusaders (13-6) the win.
Catawba’s Jackson Raper, whose 20-game hitting streak to start the season was snapped in Tuesday’s win, went 1-for-4 at the dish with two RBIs and a run scored.
Heath Mitchem, Joe Butts, Hunter Shepherd and Henderson Lentz joined Raper in the hit column. Mitchem's knock extended his team leading active hitting streak to eight games.
John Michael Faile led off the ninth for North Greenville and trimmed the deficit to 6-5 with one swing of the bat. After a walk and a groundout, the Crusaders strung together three consecutive singles, with Williams’ knock completing the comeback.
Joe Butts put the Indians on the board first, driving in Mitchem, who opened the game with a walk, with a sacrifice fly.
In the second, Catawba nudged the advantage with two runs. With the bases loaded and no outs, Shepherd scored on a sacrifice fly and DJ Laxton crossed the plate on a groundout.
The home side evened the game at 3-3 in their half of the inning, with three runs on three hits and two walks.
Raper doubled in two and scored on Butts’ second sacrifice fly and Catawba’s third of the game, reestablishing the three-run lead in the top of the fifth.
Riley Myers, Bryan Ketchie and Sawyer Strickland combined to keep North Greenville off the board through the middle frames, allowing one hit each and holding a 6-3 lead.
Williams trimmed the deficit to 6-4 when he knocked in Jack Morris with one out in the eighth.
Catawba returns to league play with a three-game set at home against Carson-Newman. The series opener is at 6 p.m. Friday at Newman Park.
