#9 Catawba opens season with 55-0 win over Livingstone

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College, ranked ninth in the AFCA pre-season poll, opened its 2001 football season with a 55-0 victory over crosstown rival Livingstone in the annual Mayor's Cup game on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.  Catawba's defense surrendered just 76 yards and only 19 on the ground, while recording five sacks and producing six turnovers.   The Indians took the opening kickoff and marched 44 yards on six plays, aided by three Livingstone penalties to go on top 8-0.  The Indians added a field goal, then capitalized on a Blue Bear fumble that led to a short run by Marcus Bland (Garner, NC) to up the lead to 18-0 at the end of the opening quarter.

Senior Matt Gross (Hendersonville, NC) added a field goal early in the second quarter, establishing a new school record for career field goals with 41.  Bland added another short touchdown run and O.J.
