Cox, Easter spark Women's Basketball to win over USC-Aiken

SALISBURY, NC – Catawba College shot 49% and held a 38-25 advantage on the boards and defeated visiting USC-Aiken 74-58 in women’s college basketball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians improve to 3-3 with the win, while USCA falls to 4-1. Junior Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) led Catawba, scoring 16 of her game-high 21 points in the final half. She iced the game all six of her free throw attempts in the final 1:24. Seniors Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) and Aisha Stewart (Topeka, KS) each added 11 apiece. The game featured five ties and five lead changes in the opening 14 minutes. The Lady Indians trailed 19-17 when Stewart tied the game on a jumper with 6:56 remaining. She would start a 13-0 run that put Catawba on top 30-19 and held a 32-24 edge at the break. The Lady Indians held a 24-9 edge on the boards at the break. The Lady Pacers trimmed the lead to four at 39-35 early in the second half as a three-pointer by Sarah Kendrick (San Antonio, TX) with 15:18 left. Catawba responded with seven straight points, capped by a Cox three-pointer to lead 46-35 with 13:51 remaining. Another three by Cox pushed the advantage to 50-37 with 12:15 to go. Aiken would not go away and got back within six at 54-48 on a three-pointer by Erica Larsen (Stockton, CA) with 8:10 left. Neither team could score for nearly three minutes until Cox broke the ice with her fourth and final three-pointer of the night with 5:24 remaining. Aiken again stormed back and cut the deficit to 62-58 on a three-point play from Kasey Mills (Provo, UT). Catawba then converted all 10 free throw tries down the stretch to pull away again. Kendrick was the only Lady Pacer to reach double figures with 11 points. Mills, Larsen, Benazura Serbecic (Banovici, BOSNIA) and Lana Mandic (Sarajevo, BOSNIA) all scored eight points. Freshman guard Ingrid Easter (Cana, VA) made her first start for Catawba and led the team with nine rebounds and five assists, while scoring eight points. #####
