Softball Falls at Francis Marion


FLORENCE, S.C. – Catawba lost 4-2 to Francis Marion in softball action on Friday afternoon at the FMU Softball Stadium. Game two of the doubleheader was wiped out after four innings due to rain. FMU was leading 2-0. The Patriots are now 15-6 on the year, while the Catawba Indians are 9-6.

Francis Marion scored all four of its runs in the fourth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit. Addie May’s two-run double put the Patriots on top. Angela Beccilli and Jaimie Harney came up with two-out RBI doubles to pad the lead.

Catawba got on top in the third after Grace Holland and Allie Baker led off the frame with singles. Taylor Martin brought home the run on a sacrifice fly. Jordan Dean doubled and scored on a pinch hit double by Bailey Benton in the seventh to get the Lady Indians a run closer.

The Lady Indians managed just the four hits off Katelyn Ellard (10-2). Ellard fanned 13 with just one walk in the complete game. Madison Hunter threw two and a third innings of scoreless relief for the Lady Indians. Preston Ellenberg (4-2) took the loss. She struck out five in three and two-thirds innings.

Catawba hosts Belmont Abbey at Whitley Field on Tuesday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
