Ketchie and Williams Make One Run Hold Up in Series Opener With Anderson
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Bryan Ketchie and Peyton Williams combined for a shutout as Catawba opened a South Atlantic Conference baseball series with a 1-0 win over visiting Anderson. The Catawba Indians improve to 17-6 overall and 4-3 in the SAC. The Trojans fall to 9-10 and 2-5.
Ketchie scattered six hits, but was aided early on by a couple double play grounders over the first four frames. He sailed through the sixth and seventh frames, but ran into trouble in the eighth.
Chase Stephens drew a leadoff walk and after a sacrifice and a passed ball the Trojans had a runner at third. A walk to Cody Adams ended Ketchie’s day, but Peyton Williams got Catawba out of the inning unscathed. He got an infield pop up and a strikeout to end the threat.
Anderson go the tying run on again in the ninth as Brandon Odachowski led off with a single. Williams came back to retire the next three batters, two on strikeouts, to post his fourth save. Ketchie moved to 6-0 with his win, he walked two and fanned five.
Catawba scored the lone run in the fourth. Jackson Raper started the inning with a single and Cameron Morrison walked. Hunter Shepherd followed with a slicing liner just inside the foul line in right field to get the run in.
The Indians couldn’t add to the lead, leaving the bases loaded, but the one run was enough. Will Gee (2-3) took the tough loss, pitching six innings and giving up just four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Lucas Smith finished up with a pair of scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Shepherd collected two of the five Catawba hits. Jackson Strange had two hits for Anderson.
The teams will finish the series with a Sunday doubleheader at 1 p.m.
