Ninth-Inning Rally Propels Baseball to Sweep of Anderson

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Jacob Nester provided a walk-off single in game one, while Hunter Shepherd tossed a two-high shutout in game two as Catawba completed a weekend sweep of visiting Anderson, winning the Sunday doubleheader 9-8 and 2-0 at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 19-6 overall and 6-3 in the SAC. The Trojans fall to 9-12 and 2-7.

Anderson had scored five times in the top of the ninth of game one to go up 8-6 on a grand slam by Brandon Odachowski. Catawba battled back and scored three times with two outs in the bottom half.

After Trojan closer Christian Carpenter retired the first two Catawba batters of the ninth things changed with Shepherd got on with a sharp single that took a hard bounce over the shoulder of the second baseman. Lee Poteat tied the game as followed with a two-run homer to right on a 1-2 pitch. Those marked the first runs allowed by Carpenter (0-1) this season.

Cameron Morrison followed the home run with a pinch-hit single and pinch-runner Jeremy Simpson raced to third on a single by Henderson Lentz. Nester stepped in a singled up the middle on an 0-2 pitch to plate the winning run.

Nester had earlier drove in two in the third as Catawba went on top 4-2 after an early deficit. Sawyer Strickland pitched into the sixth and allowed three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Riley Myers got the Indians to the ninth before Peyton Williams, who evened his mark at 1-1, entered with two runners on.

Nester and Lentz each had three hits. Poteat had two hits and scored three runs. Chandler Christenberry had a two-run homer for Anderson in the first and had two hits for the Trojans.

Shepherd was nearly flawless in the nightcap. He allowed only three baserunners in moving to 3-2. Shepherd hit a batter with two outs in the first, allowed a leadoff infield single to Dalton Shaw in the fourth and another leadoff single to Shaw in the seventh. He fanned seven in the shutout.

Catawba got the only run Shepherd needed in the fourth. Shepherd drew a leadoff a walk, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single by Lentz. The Indians added an unearned insurance run in the sixth. Poteat reached on a two-out error and came around to score on a single by Nester.

Catawba only had four hits in game two, all from the bottom third of the order. Cameron Mills had two hits for the Indians.

John McMicking (1-2) took the loss for Anderson. He allowed two runs, one earned, over five and two-thirds innings. He had two walks and five strikeouts.

Catawba is back at Newman Park on Tuesday, hosting Indiana (Pa.) in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
