Shepherd Homers Twice For Baseball In Doubleheader Split With IUP


SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba and visiting Indiana (Pa.) split a baseball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Newman Park. The Crimson Hawks took the opener 8-5, while the Catawba Indians came back for an 11-3 win in game two. The Indians, ranked 15th in NCAA II, now stand at 20-7 on the campaign. IUP is 4-7.

After dropping game one, Catawba pounded out 16 hit en route to the game two win. The Indians took the lead with four runs in the second, keyed by two-run double by Joe Butts. A pair of solo home runs from Matt Swartz and Luke Hollander in the fourth cut the Catawba lead in half before the hosts broke it open with five of its own in the fourth.

Five of the first six batters of the sixth had hits for Catawba in the outburst. Hunter Shepherd capped the frame with a three-run homer. DJ Laxton homered in the sixth for the final margin.

Riley Myers (3-0) tossed five innings for the win. He gave up two runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Peyton Williams tossed two scoreless innings of relief, surrendering a hit with a pair of strikeouts.

Jacob Neseter and Robbie Cowie each had three hits for the Indians in game two. Butts and Heath Mitchem had two with every starter getting at least one hit.

JP Pettis (0-1) pitched into the fourth and took the loss for IUP. Swartz had three of the eight hits. Hollander and Austin Vigliotti both had two hits.

IUP built an 8-2 lead after five innings of the opener and held off a late Catawba rally. Ben Teplin had an early home run and Anthony Rota hit a three-run dinger to cap a four-run fifth. Shepherd had a two-run homer in the fourth and Butts a two-run homer in the sixth. Shepherd had a RBI in the seventh as the Indians go the tying run to the plate before a ground out ended the game.

Mitchem, Shepherd and Nester all had two hits for Catawba. Shepherd had three RBI. Caleb Link (1-2) took the loss, allowing two runs over the first two innings.

Nick Kuhn (1-1) got the Crimson Hawks out of the fourth and got the win. Rota had three hits with Chris Eisel and Nick Hess each collecting two.

Weather permitting, Catawba is set to open a three-game league series with Carson-Newman at 6 p.m. on Friday night at Newman Park.
