Key Hits Elude Softball in Doubleheader Loss to Bloomsburg
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Visiting Bloomsburg picked up a pair of one-run wins to sweep a softball doubleheader from Catawba at Whitley Field on Thursday afternoon. The Huskies took game one 2-1, while rallying for a 4-3, eight-inning win in game two. Bloomsburg improves to 3-6 on the year, while the Catawba Indians are 11-8.
Abby Wild tossed a complete game to win game one for Bloomsburg, then notched a win in relief in game two to improve to 3-1. She allowed a run on seven hits with six walk and eight strikeouts in the opener. She went two shutout innings in game two, surrendering a pair of hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Danielle Barnes homered in the first innings of game one for a 1-0 lead. The Huskies added an unearned run in the third to go up 2-0. Catawba got a run home in the fifth, but left the bases loaded and Bloomsburg held on.
Catawba had runners on in every inning, but stranded 13, including seven in scoring position. Allie Baker and Sydney Goertzen had two his for the Lady Indians. Erin DelPierre collected two hits for Bloomsburg.
Catawba was one out for grabbing a split, but Bloomsburg picked up a pair of two-out singles in the seventh prior to a game-tying home run by Kalynn Wheeland. Taylor Winkelman’s RBI single in the eighth proved to be the winning hit.
The Lady Indians loaded the bases in the eighth on a pair of two out walks, but could not get the tying run home. Catawba left another 11 on base in the nightcap. Jordan Dean and Carlee Brawley each had two hits.
Anna Jasper had hurled a gem up to the late outburst by the Huskies. She finished with seven innings pitched and allowed just five hits with no walks and no strikeouts. Madison Hunter (3-2) allowed the unearned run in the eighth.
Catawba opens South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday, hosting Tusculum for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Whitley Field.
