Seven School Records Set as Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season
HICKORY, N.C. -- Catawba opened its outdoor track and field season on Friday. Most of the team is competing at the Lenoir-Rhyne Southside Power & Fitness Invitational with several distance runners entered in Charlotte’s 49er Classic. The Catawba Indians set seven school marks in the meet at Lenoir-Rhyne.
Candace Swepson set two of the school records in women’s field events. She had a hammer throw of 37.96 meters and added a javelin thrown of 20.91 meters. Three sprint records fell with Rashaun Noble running a 15.74 in placing third in the 110 hurdles. Kierra McNeill set the women’s 100 mark with a 12.57 and was fourth. Darius Turner was runner-up in the men’s 100 with a record time of 10.68.
The other two records came in the triple jump. Shakalya Robertson had a jump of 10.48 meters, while Jones Carter had a 13.68 for the men. That record broke one of several records still standing from before track was reinstated. The previous record was held by Ed Athey in 1968 at 13.66 meters.
