Softball Splits Doubleheader With Emmanuel
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba split a softball doubleheader with visiting Emmanuel on Sunday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians took the opener 3-2, while the Lions claimed an 8-3 win in game two. Catawba now stands at 14-9 on the year, while the Lions are 10-11.
Jordan Dean doubled home a run with two outs in the first of game one to put Catawba on top. The Lady Indians gave up a pair of unearned runs in the second, but tied the game in the bottom half on a hit by Gracie Gibson.
Madison Hunter (5-2) went six innings to get the win. She allowed just four hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Brooke Walser earned the save. She worked around a pair of hits, getting a key double play grounder and a strikeout to end the game with the tying run on second.
Emmanuel had five extra-base hits in gaining the split in game two. Mary Baxter and Riley Clingerman homered, while Brianna Morgan had a big two-out single in a three-run third that pushed the Lions out to a 6-1 lead.
Catawba got a home run from Dean in the loss. Brawley added two hits and Gibson another RBI single. Anna Jasper (0-1) hurled a complete game. Six of the runs allowed were earned and she posted one strikeout.
Ryanne White had three hits for Emmanuel. Baxter had two hits as did Morgan. Caitlin Parks collected two hits in the opener. Madison Hopper locked the game down for Alannah Long (1-3). Hopper hurled two hitless innings of relief.
Catawba returns to league action on Tuesday, traveling to Queens for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
