Men's Basketball drops 85-70 decision to USCSSALISBURY, NC – USC-Spartanburg shot 76% in the second half and defeated host Catawba 85-70 in men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Rifles improve to 5-1 with the win, while Catawba falls to 3-5. Catawba held just one lead in the game at 22-20 following a three-pointer by Marcus Reddick (Salisbury, NC) with 8:45 in the opening half. The lead was short lived as Spartanburg tied the game 16 seconds later on a layup by Petros Tsampas (Chania, GREECE). A jumper by Erikas Kaupaitis (Raserinai, LITHUANIA) at the 7:07 mark gave USC the lead for good. The Rifles used a 6-0 run in the final minute of the first half to take a 39-31 lead at the break. The close as Catawba could get from there was by scoring the opening basket of the second half, trimming the margin to six. USCS followed with an 11-3 run to push the edge to 50-36 at the 14:18 mark. Spartanburg led 63-47 with 8:44 remaining when Catawba made a run to cut the lead to seven at 67-60 on a Reddick layup with 5:07 left, but the Rifles made their final 10 free throws to pull away. USCS shot 56% for the game, while Catawba struggled at 41%. The Rifles also controlled the boards by a 37-21 margin.
