Softball Drops Doubleheader at Queens
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Catawba was bested twice by host Queens in a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Park Road Park. The 9-4 and 2-1 wins improve the Royals to 13-5 overall and 3-1 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 14-11 and 2-2.
Game two was tied headed to the bottom of the seventh. Jordan Hunt opened the Queens inning with a double and Grace Valchar followed with a single to end the game. Valchar knocked in both runs for the Royals. She also had a RBI single in the second to tie the game at 1-1.
Sierrah McCarthy drove in Catawba’s lone run with a two-out single in the second. It drove home Jordan Dean, who had led off the frame with a double. Those were two of just three hits for Catawba in game two. Carlee Brawley had followed Dean’s double with a single. The Lady Indians only had one base-runner after the second which game on an error to start the fourth.
Shannon McGuire (4-3) got the win with the complete game effort with no walks and six strikeouts. Brooke Walser (4-4) took the tough loss. She allowed eight hits and two runs over six innings. She walked two and fanned three.
Gerlea Patton had three hits and Sydney Ditto four RBI as Queens took the opener. Ditto’s three-run homer, which came after a two-out error, put the Royals up 3-1 in the third.
Catawba rallied back in the fourth with a pair of runs that came on a Queens error. The Royals came right back with four in their fourth. Valchar had a two-run triple and scored on a single by Cierra Robinson.
Catawba travels to Carson-Newman for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
