Fanzo's Five Goals Help Men's Lacrosse Knock Off #15 Wingate
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba shutout 15th-ranked Wingate in the final quarter and claimed a 13-9 win in South Atlantic Conference men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday night at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians, who are receiving votes for the national poll, equal its record with a sixth consecutive win, improving to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. The Bulldogs fall to 6-2 and 2-1.
Wingate had battled back from a 4-1 deficit after a quarter to pull even at 9-9 on a goal from Joe Cooper with 2:51 left in the third quarter. That ended a 4-1 run for the Bulldogs over a seven-minute span, but was the last tally for the visitors on the night.
The Indians never lost the lead and Joe Barber answered the Wingate tying goal with just 14 seconds remaining in the quarter. Midway through the fourth quarter, Cole Fanzo added to the lead at the 7:19 mark and the Indians put it away late. Robert Morrison and Fanzo scored 22 seconds apart to make the score 13-9 with 3:38 to go.
Fanzo put home five goals for the Indians. Barber had three goals and an assist. Kevin Geiger posted 15 saves with seven in the second quarter to help Catawba take a 6-4 lead to the break. Keenan D’Arcy caused three turnovers, while defenders Reese Scott and Payton Leonard scored goals.
Conor Gronback had three goals and an assist for Wingate. Ryan Ormerod and Dominic Piazza scored twice with Alex Llerandi notching a goal and two helpers. Alex Cordero stopped 14 shots.
Catawba entertains Lincoln Memorial in another SAC game at Shuford Stadium on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
