Dean Drives in Five Runs in Doubleheader Loss at Lenoir-Rhyne
HICKORY, N.C. -- Catawba dropped a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader to host Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday afternoon at Bears Field. Lenoir-Rhyne won the games by a score of 1-0 and 14-5 to up its record to 18-10 overall and 3-2 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 16-13 and 4-4.
Lenoir-Rhyne broke a scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the seventh of the opener. The Bears opened the frame with a walk then loaded the bases on a bunt single and a single to center. Kylee Leonhardt’s ground ball to third plated the winning run.
Each team had just three hits with Catawba drawing six walks and LR nine. Kaylee Cook, Allie Baker and Leah Huggins had the hits for the Lady Indians. Brandi Parks (13-5) hurled the shutout of the Bears. She walked six and fanned six.
Madison Hunter (7-4) took the loss in relief, allowing the run on two hits. She walked six and struck out three. Preston Ellenberg started and went four and two-thirds scoreless innings. She surrendered one hit with three walks and nine punch outs.
Lenoir-Rhyne broke game two open with a five-run second and a six-run third to post the win in five innings. Leanna Sherrill had a two-run single in the second and a three-run homer in the third. Talon LaClair picked up three RBI. Emily Kenley (4-3) was the winner, giving up seven hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Jordan Dean drove in all five Catawba runs. She had a two-run double in the third and a three-run homer in the fifth. Taylor Martin also picked up two hits. Brooke Walser (4-5) pitched into third inning and suffered the loss.
Catawba will host Anderson on Saturday for a doubleheader that starts at 1 p.m.
