Baseball Falls to Mount Olive in Top 25 Battle
MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- Catawba fell 11-3 to host Mount Olive in a battle of nationally-ranked baseball teams on Tuesday afternoon at Scarborough Field. The Trojans, ranked 21st, improve to 20-8, while the fourth-ranked Catawba Indians fall to 27-8.
The Trojans scored in every inning but the first to grab the win. DJ Laxton’s two-out single in the second plated Jackson Raper to give Catawba a 1-0 lead in the second. The Trojans struck back for two in the bottom half and led the rest of the way.
Hunter Gore hit a two-out, two-run homer in the second to put Mount Olive on top 2-1. After single runs in the third and fourth frames, the Trojans scored two each over the next three innings. Catawba got within 8-3 in the seventh as Raper and Hunter Shepherd singled home runs.
Catawba used nine pitchers in the defeat. Greg Brown (3-1) took the loss as he went three innings and fanned three. Raper and Laxton each had two hits for the Indians.
JT Stone and Aaron Hedgepeth both had three hits for the Trojans and were among four that drove in a pair of runs. Gore would score three times. Trey Pate (1-1) got the win in relief, the second of seven Mount Olive hurlers.
Catawba will open a three-game conference series at Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday night at 6 p.m.
