Gibson Homers Twice as Softball Gets Split at Wingate
WINGATE, N.C. -- Catawba split a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader with host Wingate on Wednesday afternoon at the WU Softball Complex. The Catawba Indians rallied for a 6-5 win in the opener, but Wingate picked up a 6-2 win in the second game. Catawba is now 18-15 overall and 6-6 in the SAC. The Bulldogs are 27-13 and 6-6.
Gracie Gibson led off the sixth inning of game one with a home run to pull Catawba even at 5-5. With two outs in the seventh, Jordan Dean singled and stole second. That set up Leah Huggins, who delivered a single to plate Dean with the eventual winning run.
Wingate got the tying run to second in the bottom half, but Madison Hunter got a fly out then a strike out following a walk to end the game. She improved to 9-4 in the circle as she pitched the final three innings in relief of Preston Ellenberg. The duo combined to allow just seven hits and fanned three.
Catawba benefited from a Wingate error to score four times in the third. Kaylee Cook had put the Lady Indians up 1-0 before the error then Taylor Martin added a sacrifice fly before RBI singles by Dean and Huggins.
Two walks and a two-run double by Jordan Floyd cut Catawba’s lead to 4-2 in the fourth. Wingate went on top in the fifth. A two-out error allowed the go-ahead run to cross the plate.
Dean had three hits in the opener. Huggins had two hits with two RBI and Carlee Brawley also had two hits.
Back-to-back doubles from Aubrey Reep and Emma Swenson gave Wingate a 2-0 lead after an inning in game two. Catawba battled back to tie it as Gibson homered in the fourth and hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Wingate’s leadoff batter reached on an error to start the sixth and the Bulldogs went on to score four times. Sapp’s single put Wingate on top and Mary Claire Coyne hit a sacrifice fly. Swenson capped the frame with a two-run single.
Cook collected three hits for Catawba. Martin added two hits. Hunter (9-5) took the loss in relief with only one of the four runs she allowed being earned. Reep (13-4) was the winner for Wingate. She struck out eight and allowed eight hits in the complete game.
Catawba travels to King on Saturday to make up a postponed doubleheader with the Tornado at 2 p.m.
