Men's Lacrosse Win Streak Ends Against #2 Limestone
GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Limestone scored 11 goals in the second quarter as the second-ranked Saints claimed a 24-7 victory over 18th-ranked Catawba in men’s lacrosse action on Friday night at Saints Field. Limestone improves to 12-0, while the Catawba Indians fall to 8-3, ending an eight-game winning streak.
Catawba allowed the Saints just one goal in the opening quarter and trailed 1-0. Limestone scored a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the second quarter with Tony Bellotte putting Catawba on the board at the 9:20 mark to make it 3-1.
The Saints took control midway through the second quarter, scoring five times in a span of 1:37 to go on top 8-1. Limestone added two more goals before Bellotte scored again for Catawba. It would be 12-3 at the break.
The teams were even during the early part of the second half, but Limestone put the game away as the bridged the third and fourth quarter with eight unanswered tallies for a 23-5 lead. Defenders Payton Leonard and Reese Scott scored fourth-quarter goals for the Indians.
Bellotte paced Catawba with three goals. Christian Norrie had a goal and an assist. Leonard added three caused turnovers and four ground balls to his goal.
Larson Sundown and Matt Hommel each had four goals and a pair of assists for the Saints. Clark Walter added three goals. Limestone dominated face-offs, winning 31 of 35 and holding a hefty 65 to 23 edge in ground balls.
Catawba returns to league action on Wednesday, traveling to Lenoir-Rhyne for another 7 p.m. contest.
