Softball Splits Doubleheader at King
BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Catawba and host King split a softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the King Softball Field. The Catawba Indians won the opener 10-1, while the Tornado came back for a 7-1 in the nightcap. Catawba is now 19-16 on the year, while King is 24-15.
Catawba jumped on King quickly in game one as the first four Lady Indians singled with Preston Ellenberg driving home a run. Gracie Gibson doubled home two and Leah Huggins followed with a RBI single After Carlee Brawley plate a run with a ground out, Catawba led 5-0 after half an inning.
Catawba added three more runs in the fourth. Back-to-back RBI doubles from Kaylee Cook and Sydney Goertzen got the inning going. King kept the game alive with a run in the fifth, but the Lady Indians added two in the sixth and Ellenberg closed the game with a scoreless sixth.
Ellenberg (5-3) went the distance to earn the win. She gave up six hits, walked none and fanned seven. Goertzen went 4-for-4 and scored three runs. Cook had three hits and scored three times. Ellenberg drove in three.
King got out early in game two. Katelyn Davidson hit a three-run homer in the first and Jenna Burnett had a two-run homer in the third as the Tornado grabbed a 6-0 lead. Catawba avoided the shutout in the seventh. Jordan Dean led off with a single and came around to score on a two-hit hit by Brawley.
Brawley and Dean each had two hits for Catawba in game two. King had just seven hits, but the two long balls provided the difference. Burnett had three hits. Casey Gilbert (10-4) got the win for King.
Catawba is in action again tomorrow at Lees-McRae for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
