White and Bemis Take Wins at Phoenix Inv. Track & Field Meet
ELON, N.C. -- Catawba broke six records at the one-day Phoenix Invitational Track & Field Meet held on Saturday at Robertson Track & Field Complex. Highlighting the day was MeKayla White, who won the women’s long jump with a record jump of 5.88 meters.
White also broke her own mark in the triple jump, finishing fifth with a leap of 11.23 meters. Also breaking records in women’s field events were Candace Swepson and Danielle Ortiz. Swepson set a record in the javelin (27.00m) and Ortiz in the hammer throw (39.69m). Both finished 16th in their event.
The men set a pair of records on the track. Tom Joyce lowered his own mark in the 800 meters, finishing second in a time of 1:53.94. The other record came from the 4x400 relay team, who went sixth. The team of Braxton Ford, RahQuan Terry, Joyce and Brien Pittman posted a time of 3:24.19.
Catawba also added four other top five finishes. Ethan Bemis won the 1500m in a time of 4:03.14. His brother, Logan, was second in 4:08.86. Kyle Rhodes posted a fourth in the 5000 meters (15:43.20) and Michal Swepson took fifth in the 3000 meter steeplechase (10:20.56).
Catawba will compete at the N.C. A&T Invitational next weekend.
