Ellenberg and Walser Dominate in Softball's Sweep of Coker
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Preston Ellenberg and Brooke Walser hurled complete games and Catawba’s offense did just enough to sweep visiting Coker in a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 2-1 and 1-0 to improve to 21-16 overall and 8-6 in the SAC. The Cobras fall to 27-13 and 6-7.
The only runs scored in either game came in the fourth inning. Ellenberg allowed a one-out home run to Maria Williams as Coker took a 1-0 lead in the opener. The Lady Indians came right back in the bottom half.
Jordan Dean tied the game with her one-out home run. The jump-started the Catawba offense as Taylor Martin, Gracie Gibson and Carlee Brawley followed with singles to load the bases. Sierrah McCarthy got another run home and a grounder to third that forced pinch runner Beth Ann Martin at third, but allowed Taylor Martin to score.
That was all the runs Ellenberg needed as she improved to 6-3. She allowed just two hits with one walk. Brawley had two of Catawba’s five hits. Christine Carver (8-7) took the loss, tossing four innings for Coker.
Walser and Taylor Forehand locked in the duel in the nightcap. Catawba left the bases loaded in the second, but cashed in on a second attempt in the fourth. With two out, Gibson walked. McCarthy and Sydney Goertzen singled to set the stage for Kaylee Cook. Cook lined a single to left to plate the game’s lone run.
Walser scattered six hits in improving to 5-6. She got Williamson out on a come-backer with two on in the sixth then started a 1-6-3 double play in the seventh. Walser walked three and struck out one. Forehand (6-2) went four innings and gave up four hits with four walks and one punch out. Madison King had three hits and Alex Alverson two for Coker in game two.
Catawba travels to Mars Hill for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
