White Sox to return in summer for rehab work

Catawba College and the Chicago White Sox will continue with an agreement allowing the organization to once again use the facilities at Catawba over the summer to help in the rehabilitation of their athletes. Last season, a dozen players from the White Sox organization, along with Scott Takao, the White Sox Minor League Athletic Training and Rehabilitation Coordinator used the weight room and training facilities in the Hayes Field House as well as work in Newman Park. The players were from Chicago’s six different minor league teams and either had long-term or injuries that would take recovery time of two weeks or more. During the summer, the players were involved in rehabilitation between 8 a.m. and noon each day. That rehabilitation included conditioning, weights and baseball activity, as well as a weekly report from Takao about the progression of the players. According to Takao, Catawba’s facilities were chosen because of the college’s close proximity to four of the White Sox’ six minor league teams. The organization has a triple A team in Charlotte, a double A team in Birmingham, AL, single A teams in Winston-Salem and Kannapolis, a rookie plus team in Great Falls, MT, and a rookie minus team in Bristol, VA. “Our biggest challenge in seeking a facility was finding a place to get the baseball work done,” Takao explained. “Some of the players are at that point between rehab and work where they need to get back into baseball functions. Catawba had what we needed, plus the team doctor for the Kannapolis team, Dr. Steve Furr, has his office in Salisbury.” Takao said the minor league rehabilitation clinic has been held in Phoenix in two prior years. Catawba’s Head Athletic Trainer Bob Casmus foresees future hands-on training opportunities for the athletic training students with the White Sox continuing to hold their rehabilitation clinic on campus. “There’s not only the prestige of having the White Sox here with us, but there’s an opportunity for clinical rotation among our athletic training students,” he said. “The first year has been a good learning experience on both sides,” Takao said. “I have really appreciated the hospitality shown by Catawba College’s Athletic Department. I look forward to having athletic training students involved in the rehabilitation programs.” #####
