Women's Tennis Gives Top-Seed Tusculum a Fight in SAC Tournament Opener
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- Catawba battled with 16th-ranked Tusculum in the quarterfinals of the South Atlantic Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament before falling 4-1. The top-seeded Pioneers improve to 16-2 on the year, while the Catawba Indians, seeded eighth, end their season at 13-9.
Tusculum took the doubles point, winning at #1 and 7-5 in a tight match at #3 against Olivia Wooldridge and Lauren Laughton. Sophie Hirsch and Una Pandurevic were headed to a tiebreaker at #2 doubles.
In singles, Pandurevic pulled Catawba even after she won the first set 6-0 at #3 singles before her opponent retired. Tusculum earned the winning point by winning competitive matches at #1, #3 and #6.
Hirsch won her first set 7-5 and was even in set two at #2 singles. Wooldridge had lost a first-set tiebreaker 7-5 and led 2-1 in set two when the match ended.
