Softball Ends Season After Doubleheader Loss to LMU
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba dropped a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader to visiting Lincoln Memorial on Monday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Lady Railsplitters won the games by the scores of 8-5 and 3-1 to improve to 34-12 overall and 12-8 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians end their season at 22-21.
Ty-Kella Goins led off the game with a home run for the visitors and LMU went on to score five times in the first inning and never trailed. Goins would add a RBI single later in the inning.
Catawba closed the gap in the fourth. After trailing 6-0, the Lady Indians scored four times in the frame to get within 6-5. With two outs, Kaylee Cook drew a bases loaded walk and Carlee Brawley scored on a wild pitch. Taylor Martin followed with a two-run single.
The Lady Indians couldn’t muster much against LMU reliever Justice Smith (10-2), who got the Railsplitters out of the fourth. She pitched three and a third scoreless innings and surrendered just two hits with a pair walk and two strikeouts. Lincoln Memorial got a pair of unearned insurance runs in the seventh.
Walser (6-8) gutted it out to throw a complete game in game two. She worked around 10 hits and a pair of walks to give up three runs (two earned) with two strikeouts.
LMU went on top with an unearned run in the fourth. Dean answered that tally with a two-out home run in the home fourth to make it 1-1. LMU put together three hits to open the fifth, scoring on a single by Sierra Hucklebee and a sacrifice fly from Kelsie Hocutt.
Bailey Griffith settled down after the fourth and allowed Catawba just two singles over the last three innings to improve to 13-7. Goins added three hits in game two.
