Baseball Ends Regular Season With Win Over WSSU
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Catawba closed out the regular season with a 9-2 victory over host Winston-Salem State on Tuesday night at BB&T Field. The Catawba Indians, ranked 11th, ups its record to 38-12, while the Rams fall to 28-15.
Catawba got all the offense it would need in the second, scoring five times. Jacob Nester drew a bases-loaded walk to force home the first run then Bryce Butler drove home two with a single. An RBI ground out by Heath Mitchem and a double by Jeremy Simpson got the final two runs in,
Simpson singled home a run in the fourth and Hunter Shepherd doubled home another in the seventh. The Rams answered those runs with single runs in their fourth and seventh, but that was all the offense WSSU could muster.
Joe Butts and Butler drew walks in the ninth to force home the final two runs. After drawing 10 walks on Monday against USC Aiken, the Indians walked 11 times Tuesday to go with nine hits. Shepherd had three of the hits and Butler posted three RBI. Simpson had a pair of hits and two RBI.
Greg Brown (6-1) got the win in tossing his designated three innings. He surrendered no runs on two hits with four strikeouts. DJ Laxton struck out three in two innings of work, while Peyton Williams struck out the side in the ninth.
Hunter Phillips had two hits for the Rams. Luke Spiva doubled home a run in the fourth and Trenton Smiley homered in the seventh.
Catawba begins play in the Pilot J South Atlantic Conference Tournament on Friday. The third-seeded Indians face fourth-seeded Tusculum at 7:30 p.m.
