Women's Basketball takes three of four during action over HolidaysThe Catawba women’s basketball team won three of four outings in action during the holiday season. Just after Christmas the Lady Indians went on the road and defeated Virginia State 68-48 and Virginia Union 87-72. Following New Year’s, Catawba defeated West Virginia State 74-56, then fell to Charleston, WV, 90-80. The Lady Indians are 8-5 on the season. Danyel Locklear recorded double-doubles in three of the four games. She had 17 points and 11 rebounds in the win over Virginia State as Catawba held the Lady Trojans to just 29% shooting and held a 49-37 edge on the boards. Aisha Stewart also reached double figures with a dozen points. Stewart had a career-high 31 points in the win over Virginia Union, canning 12-of-17 shots, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. She added nine rebounds. Locklear had 19 points, while Ashley Cox dished out 11 assists. Catawba would shoot 57% in the contest, including going 19-of-29 in the opening half to build a 52-38 advantage. In its opening game of the Comfort Suites New Year’s Classic at Goodman Gym, Catawba pulled away in the second half with Locklear scoring 28 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Cox would also reach double figures with 13. The Lady Indians held a 44-31 edge on the boards helping to overcome 30 turnovers. Catawba put five players in double figures against Charleston, but could not outscore the Golden Eagles. Cox scored 19 points and had five assists, while Locklear scored 16 points and added 11 rebounds to lead the way. Isiaette Darden had 14 points, while Stewart had 12 and Tamekia Foster 10 points and eight boards. #####
