MVP Shepherd Leads Way on SAC Baseball All-Tournament Team

ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) -- Catawba’s Hunter Shepherd was tabbed the 2019 South Atlantic Conference Baseball Championship MVP as voted by the tournament participant head coaches. It was announced by the conference on Tuesday. The panel also selected a 15 member All-Tournament Team.
 
Shepherd, a junior from Salisbury, N.C., did it all for Catawba, earning the SAC Championship MVP Award. At the plate, he led the tournament with nine hits and tied for second with 10 total bases. He hit for a .600 average through the Indians’ four games, as Catawba went undefeated in the tournament to take the title. Shepherd collected a double, walked twice, and batted three runners in. He finished with a slugging percentage of .667 and an on-base percentage of .647. On the mound, he earned a win through 5.1 innings and combined for a shutout. Shepherd allowed only three hits and one walk, while striking out five batters. He was perfect in the field with 27 put outs and five assists with zero errors.

Joining Shepherd on the all-tournament team for Catawba was senior pitcher Riley Myers, junior pitchers Bryan Ketchie, Sawyer Strickland and Peyton Williams, junior third baseman Jackson Raper and junior catcher Cameron Morrison.

Myers appeared in three of the four games of the tournament. He allowed one unearned run, which game in the opener when he posted the win over Tusculum. He pitched five scoreless innings in the two wins over Newberry. For the tournament, Myers went six and a third innings, allowing six hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

Ketchie threw a complete game shutout against Lincoln Memorial in game two. He surrendered just five hits with a walk and six punchouts. Strickland had two appearances and grabbed a win in Monday’s championship game. He gave up two runs (one earned) off six hits in seven and two-thirds innings of tournament work. He walk two and struck out two.

Williams saved three games in three appearances over the weekend. He was unscored upon over his three innings. He gave up two hits with and walk and four punch outs. Raper went 7-for-16 (.438) at the plate and drove in five runs. He also swiped two bases and scored a run. Morrison handled a pitching staff that boasted 1.00 ERA over four games. He was hitless in the tournament, but reached base three times on two walks and hit by pitch, scoring two runs.
 
Catawba led the way with seven players on the all-tournament team, followed by Newberry with four players. Newberry and Lincoln Memorial rounded out the team with two selections each. Below is a look at the 2019 SAC Baseball Championship All-Tournament Team.
