Locklear paces Women's Basketball to league-opening winSALISBURY, NC – In a battle of the pre-season South Atlantic Conference favorites, Catawba College opened defense of its league title with a 63-52 win in women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. Senior Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) led the way for Catawba, scoring 29 points with 12 rebounds and seven steals. The Lady Indians improve to 9-5 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 5-7 and 0-1. Catawba shot just 27% in the opening half, but used 13 offensive rebounds to hold a 29-28 edge at the break. The Lady Indians led 29-20at the 4:07 mark of the half, but did not score the rest of the frame as the Bears closed the half with an 8-0 run. Lenoir-Rhyne would take a 41-36 lead early in the final half, but Catawba responded with a 10-0 burst with eight of the points coming from Locklear. The Lady Indians would not trail again and would go up by seven at 54-47 with 5:28 left. Catawba would shoot 42% in the final half, while the Bears cooled off from a 46% first half, hitting just 23% in the last half. Aisha Stewart (Topeka, KS) also reached double figures for Catawba with 12, while freshman Tameka Foster (Chesapeake, VA) had 10 points and seven rebounds. Crystal Clary (Hampton, VA) had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Lenoir-Rhyne, while Kim Small (Greensboro, NC) had 10 points and eight rebounds. #####
