Cross Country Opens With Runner-Up Finishes at Fleet Feet Invite

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Wingate edged Catawba in both men’s and women’s cross country action at the Fleet Fleet Invite at Salisbury Community Park on Saturday morning. The Bulldog men scored 24 points to top Catawba’s 34, while the Wingate women scpred 19 to the Catawba Indians’ 46.

Micah Kipchumba cross the line 12 seconds ahead of Catawba’s Ethan Bemis to take the 8k men’s victory. He had a time of 26:30 to Bemis’ 26:42. Two Catawba freshman posted top seven finishes. Erick Ramirez-Ramos was fifth (26:55) and Matthew Fowler took seventh (27:24).

Wingate’s Franziska Althaus covered the women’s 5k course in a time of 18:41 to win the women’s race. Catawba’s Hannah Mercer was second at 19:32. Catawba freshman Madison Lowrey was 10th in a time of 20:17.

Catawba next runs in Wingate’s Bulldog Stampede on Sept. 21 on the Wingate campus.
