Women's Soccer Gets Season Opening Win Over Lynn
BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Catawba women's soccer team came out on fire in their 2019 debut as they scored a 4-1 victory on the road against Lynn University.
Starting the scoring for the Indians was Jovana Sanchez, who scored in the sixth minute on a penalty kick. The Fighting Knights of Lynn would strike back to tie the game in the 26th minute on a goal by Crystal Ayn Hagberg. From there it was all Catawba, as they would score the final three goals of the match to seal the victory. The Indians' second goal came from Callie Hammond in the 32nd minute off an assist from Maddie Capel and Catawba took a 2-1 lead into halftime.
The second half got started with an unassisted goal by Carson Schoeppe in the 49th minute to stretch the lead to 3-1. The fourth and final goal came off the foot of Katie Beck on a penalty kick in the 77th minute to put Lynn away.
After the game, head coach Nick Brown said of his team's performance, "I was really proud of the girls today and how they battled everything that was thrown their way...I think once we scored the first goal we were really able to settle in and do some good things...we will celebrate this one today and get ready for the next one starting on Monday."
Jovana Sanchez, who scored the first goal of the match said, "Today's game showed some character from our team involving our chemistry, work ethic, and passion."
Sophomore Katie Beck added, "We played our game and we were able to break down Lynn's defense. Each player did their job which resulted in many counter attacks leading to goals...it was a great way to start the season with many more wins to come."
Next up for Catawba is a September 11 match-up at Francis Marion. Gametime is scheduled for 7 p.m.
