Men's Soccer Loses 3-2 in Season Opener to Barton
WILSON, N.C. -- After a hard fought battle on Saturday night, the Catawba men's soccer team was defeated 3-2 at the hands of Barton College. After being down 2-0 in the first half, the Indians stormed back to tie the game at 2-2 late in the contest only to come up just short in the end.
Barton got on the board in the 10th minute on a goal by Jonas Svavarsson. Just twelve minutes later, the Bulldogs scored again on a goal by Throstur Jonasson. Both teams would battle hard for the next 47 minutes as neither team could score until a goal by Catawba's Keenan Tuck in the 69th minute brought the Indians back to within a goal.
Just ten minutes later, a goal by Simone Trentin tied the game 2-2 as Catawba had climbed all the way back into the match. However, a goal by Barton's David Breitenbach only thirty seconds later broke the tie and would turn out to be the game winner for the Bulldogs.
The Indians led Barton in shots and shots on goal but it would not be enough to get a victory. Other contributors for Catawba included Hunter Faust, who had one assist, and goalkeeper Luc Denisselle who had four saves.
Next up for the men's soccer team is a September 11 match at North Greenville. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
