Volleyball Sweeps Past Chowan to Grab First Win
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba notched its first volleyball win of the season under new head coach, Patrick Nicholas, with a three set sweep of visiting Chowan on Saturday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians rolled to a 25-11, 25-12 and 25-18 victory to improve to 1-2. The Hawks fall to 1-2.
Freshman Jasmine Wooten tallied double figures in kills for the second straight match, posting a team-high 14 in the win. She added 13 digs. Libero Malia Carr also record 13 digs with Morgan Hester handing out 32 assists. Jessica Walker added five kills and three blocks.
Sydney Hiner led Chowan with six kills. Katie Houston had a dozen digs and Anixa Rose-Martinez 11. Rosa-Martinez added five kills. Ann-Marie Johnson registered seven blocks. The Hawks hit a negative one percent, while the Lady Indians hit at nearly 31%.
Catawba took over midway through the first set behind the serving of Ashley Johnson. The lead ballooned from 8-6 to 16-6 with Wooten killing off three of the points in the run. A combo block from Kellum and Walker upped the lead to 24-9 and a Kellum kill ended the set.
It was an 8-0 run in set two that pushed the Lady Indians to a comfortable 18-9 bulge. Wooten and Johnson had early kills and Jade Brooks served an ace then a kill to end the run.
Wooten and Jaida Henderson each had two kills to start a 5-0 run the put Catawba up 17-11 in the final set. Chowan closed within 18-14, but kills from Henderson and Morgan Harrison ended the run and Catawba stayed comfortably in front the rest of the way.
Catawba will host Queens in league action on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
