WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Kendall Davis capped a 94-yard drive with a one-yard run with 33 seconds left and Trey Murray made a tackle at the two-yard-line on a Winston-Salem State hail mary on the final play to give Catawba a 21-14 win over the host Rams on Saturday night at Bowman Gray Stadium. The win evens the Catawba Indians’ record at 1-1, while WSSU goes to 0-2.

Catawba started its winning drive on its own six with 7:34 remaining. Roman White had two grabs early in the drive, one for 18 to move the ball to the 30, and another on a third-and-eight for 11 yards. On a fourth down at the WSSU 40, Demonte Good carried for six yards and put together runs of 17 and nine yards to put the ball on the one, setting up Davis’ keeper. A two-point pass to Kaylon Wade put the Indians up 21-14.

The Rams got one last chance. Two passes moved the ball from the WSSU 33 to the Catawba 48. With one second left, Dominique Graves lofted a deep pass that was caught by Chandler Belk, but Murray was there to drive Belk out of bounds short of the goal.

Davis went 12-of-21 through the air for 147 yards and one score. He added another touchdown and 32 yards on the ground. Good ran for 123 yards on 24 carries. White and Good led the receivers with three catches each. Dominic Burnam had a touchdown grab in the first quarter.

Graves passed for 249 yards for the Rams, completing 15-of-27 passes. Belk made five catches for 146 yards and Farrell Murchinson ran for 51 yards.

Catawba took the lead late in the first quarter when Davis capped a 74-yard drive with a five-yard pass to Burman. The Rams answered with an 8-yard drive when Murchinson carried in from a yard out. The Indians retook the lead with two minutes left in the half as Clayton Crile hit on an 18-yard field goal.

Graves put the Rams on top at the break, hitting Cameron Williams on a 33-yard strike with 30 seconds to go. That would be the final points for WSSU as Catawba’s defense pitched a shutout in the second half.

Catawba picked off Graves twice. Cris Page set up Crile’s first field goal with an interception near midfield. With the Rams threatening in the third quarter, Cameron Davis batted a pass into the hands of LJ Melvin, who returned the pick 54 yards to the WSSU. That set up Crile’s second field goal, from 31 yards out, to bring the Indians within 14-13.

Catawba stays on the road next weekend, traveling to UNC Pembroke for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
