Swimming falls in battle of top 20 teamsWingate, NC -- Wingate University senior swimmers Stephanie Reinshuttle and Kristyn Hoffman were big factors as the Bulldogs topped Catawba College 134-90 in a battle of two of the top 20 NCAA Division II women’s swimming teams Saturday afternoon at the Wingate University Natatorium. The 11th-ranked Bulldogs will travel to the University of Richmond Friday (5 p.m.) to face the Spiders and Wagner University in a double-dual meet. Number 18 Catawba visits North Carolina A&T State University on January 30 for a 2 p.m. double-dual meet with the Aggies and Radford University. Reinshuttle won two events, the 100 Back (1:01.40) and the 400 Individual Medley (4:42.35). Reinshuttle’s time in the 100 Back broke her own team and pool record of 1:01.52. Hoffman was victorious in the 200 Butterfly with a time of 2:20.68. The Bulldogs won eight of the 13 events contested Saturday afternoon. Wingate junior Christy Cousins joined Reinshuttle as a double-winner. Cousins won the 50 Free (25.61) and 100 Free (55.81). Two Wingate University freshman set pool records for the Bulldogs. Laura Gold won the 100 Breaststroke with a pool-record time of 1:09.38. Ashley Gunzelman took the 1650 Free with a pool-record time of 18:09.76. Sophomores Jessica Herman and Maureen Driscoll also broke the pool record in the 1650 Free with times of 18:33.78 and 18:41.78, respectively. The Bulldogs finished one-two-three in the 1650 Free. Catawba sophomore Erin Hyde was the big winner Saturday, triumphing in three events. Individually, Hyde won the 200 Free (2:00.82) and the 200 Backstroke (2:12.66). Hyde joined senior Beth Gill and freshmen Jaimee Park and Lauren Smith to win the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:49.31. Indian freshmen Margeaux Doiron and Katherine Fair also won events for the visitors. Fair brke the Catawba record in the 100 breast stroke with a time of 1:11.85. #####
