Volleyball Tops Coker For First SAC Win
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba earned its first league win of the season, topping visiting Coker in four sets in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improved to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the SAC after the 25-19, 25-19, 23-25 and 25-23 victory. The Cobras fell to 3-4 and 1-3.
Catawba won the first two sets and jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the fourth before Coker rallied back to force the tight finish. A kill and block by Emily Everton got the comeback started and when Everton followed two kills by Cierra Harvey and an ace from Olivia Cerick, the set was tied at 18-all. The Cobras capped a 7-0 run on a combo block by Harvey and Everton for a 19-18 lead.
The Lady Indians withstood the rally. Kills by Kylie Morgan and Allie Grubb put Catawba back on top and back-to-back kills by Morgan pushed Catawba to a 22-20 edge. A combo block by Jade Brooks and Ashley Johnson gave the Lady Indians a match point at 24-21, but the Cobras crept within 24-23 after a kill from Everton and a block by Taylor du Bray and Chelsey Blume. Catawba went back to Morgan, who put down a kill to end the match.
Morgan finished with 20 kills to pace Catawba and added 13 digs. Jasmine Wooten recorded 10 kills with a dozen digs. Grubb picked up seven kills and served two aces, while Johnson tallied seven kills with a pair of blocks. Libero Malia Carr registered 15 digs and setter Morgan Hester posted 48 assists with three aces.
Everton topped Coker with 20 kills and had 15 digs and three blocks. Cerick followed with 12 kills. Blume posted six blocks with du Bray picking up seven kills and 15 digs. Ashley Carson handed out 46 assists with 14 digs.
Catawba hosts 25th-ranked Wingate on Saturday at 2 p.m.
