Volleyball Comes Up Short in Fiesty Match With #25 Wingate
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba gave a spirited effort against 25th-ranked Wingate before falling in three sets to the Bulldogs in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. Wingate claimed the win by the scores of 25-22, 34-32 and 25-21 and improved to 10-0 overall and 5-0 in the SAC. Catawba Indians fall to 2-4 and 1-4.
Wingate had control of the first set, leading 20-12 after a kill from Rachel Alles, but Catawba regrouped and made a run to get back into the sets. The Lady Indians reeled off seven straight points on the serve of Malia Carr. A kill by Kylie Morgan had the Lady Indians within 24-22 before an error allowed Wingate to take the set.
Catawba used that momentum to lead most of the second set. The Lady Indians turned an early 6-3 deficit into a 9-6 edge and went on to push the lead to 19-13 after a block by Jessica Walker and Claire Kellum. Wingate trailed 24-21, but staved off three match points to pull even. The teams battled back-and-forth until the Bulldogs scored three straight points to close the set, getting a kill from Sophie Schaff, an ace from Marianna Warren and a block by Schaff and Alles.
The third set was just as tight, featuring 13 ties and six lead changes. With the set tied at 17-all, Anne Abernathy had a block and a kill to give Wingate the lead. Warren added another kill for a 20-17 edge. Catawba closed to within 22-21 on a kill by Walker, but the Bulldogs took the final three points to close out the match.
Morgan led Catawba with 17 kills and added 11 digs and two blocks. Jasmine Wooten followed with 12 kills and 14 digs. Kellum picked up 17 digs, with Carr and Morgan Hester collecting 13. Walker posted five blocks and Hester 40 assists.
Abernathy reached 15 kills for Wingate. Alles had nine kills, 14 digs, five blocks and 24 assists. Schaff and Maggie Young also had five blocks, while Treslyn Ortiz picked up 15 digs.
Catawba is on the road for the next two weeks, starting on Friday at UVa-Wise at 7 p.m.
