Volleyball Upended at Tusculum
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- Catawba was downed by Tusculum in three sets in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Arena. The Pioneers took the match 25-22, 25-15 and 27-25 in improving to 6-6 overall and 2-5 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians are 3-5 and 2-5.
Claire Kellum led Catawba’s hitting with 10 kills and at 29.2%. Kylie Morgan followed with eight kills. Libero Malia Carr had 10 digs and three aces, while setter Morgan Hester had 19 assists with 11 digs. Jade Brooks served two aces and posted seven kills.
Carli Pigza posted a dozen kills with four blocks for Tusculum. Taylor Blyth added seven blocks and Tatum Thornton six as the Pioneers recorded 13 for the match. Carly Sosnowski recorded 13 digs.
Tusculum pulled away late to take the first set that saw 13 ties and five lead changes. With the set tied at 19, two kills from Aubrey Hawkins pushed the Pioneers up by two. An error and a kill from Gabby Gray capped a four-point run. The Lady Indians closed within 23-21 on kills from Morgan and Brooks, but an error and kill from Pizga ended the set.
It was a 7-3 run in the second set that moved the Pioneers out to a 19-12 lead. That was enough to claim the set and a 2-0 edge. Catawba overcame a late 20-17 deficit in set three. A kill and an ace by Brooks closed the gap to a point and the Lady Indians pulled even at 22-22 on an ace by Carr. The teams traded points until a combo block from Blythe and Hawkins ended the match.
Catawba is on the road again next weekend with a match Friday at 7 p.m. at Lincoln Memorial.
