Stewart's seven three-pointers, Locklear lift Women's Basketball over Wingate

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College senior forward Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) posted a double-double with 29 points and 16 rebounds (both game-highs) as the Lady Indians defeated visiting Wingate 81-70 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action at Goodman Gymnasium on Wednesday night. Catawba improves to 10-7 overall and 2-2 in the SAC, earning a ninth straight win over the Bulldogs. Wingate falls to 10-7 and 3-1. Lady Indian senior forward Aisha Stewart (Topeka, KS) tied a Catawba school-record with seven three-point field goals, including a key trey with 1:24 left to give Catawba a 75-70 lead. Stewart hit seven-of-11 triples en route to a 23-point performance. The Lady Indians would convert on six free throw attempts in the final 39 seconds to seal the win. Catawba junior guard Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) contributed 14 points for the Lady Indians. For Wingate, senior guard Samantha Dailey (Huntington, WV) had 21 points, while freshman guard Tanetra Barrett (Marshville, NC) netted 20 points. Bulldog senior guard Julie Law (Lancaster, SC) had 11 points off the bench. Catawba led 50-37 on two Locklear free throws with 15:58 remaining in the contest. The Bulldogs responded with 16 unanswered points to take a 53-50 lead on a traditional three-point play by Barrett at the 11:06 mark. The lead was Wingate’s first of the contest. After Wingate’s flurry, the two teams were tied four times. In addition, the two teams had four lead changes. Wingate pushed its lead to 57-53 on a Law jumper with 9:16 to go. Catawba netted seven points in a row to go up 60-57 on two Cox free throws at the 7:56 plateau. Catawba pushed its lead to five before Wingate would make one last rally. A Barrett three-point field goal gave the Bulldogs a 68-67 lead with 4:57 remaining. Stewart answered with a trifecta to give the Lady Indians a 70-68 lead. A Law jumper tied the game at 70 with 2:19 left. Locklear gave the hosts the lead for good on a jumper at 2:04, making the score 72-70. Catawba outscored Wingate 14-2 in the final 4:57. The Lady Indians made 22-of-25 free throws on the evening, including a perfect six-for-six in the final 39 seconds as Catawba kept Wingate at bay. Locklear scored the opening 15 points for the Lady Indians and totaled 22 points at the break. #####
